Remote failure: USB disconnects

Hello!

My Vero4k remote stopped working. I thought it might be the battery, so I went out and got a new battery, but that didn’t change anything. The little blue light can be seen activating when you press buttons.

I connected to the Vero and looked through the journal to see what was going on, and I found these messages:

I tried to reboot, tried unplugging the usb dongle, and plugging it into a different port, but the same results.

I asked my friend, who also has a Vero4k+ to try my USB dongle and remote, to see if it works on h his device. He plugged it in, and the entire Vero hung while it was plugged in. The GUI would just spin, and be unresponsive to the remote. He then unplugged my USB dongle, plugged his in, and everything worked again. He also tried to use the remote, with his dongle, and it did not work.

Any ideas of other things to try, or to check? Thanks!

If you swap the dongles, you need to initiate a re-pairing process, by holding Home and OK.

I am not sure i understand how that works - can any remote pair with any dongle?

I have tried to plug @anardog’s remote and dongle in my device and i can reproduce their problem: the dongle is detected fine but as soon as i hit a button on the remote, the dongle disconnects and reconnects, making the entire thing totally useless. So it’s not something specific to @anardog’s Vero. I suspect their dongle or remote might be screwed up.

I am not sure how to diagnose this further, considering I do not understand if I can pair their dongle with my remote or my dongle with their remote… I tried holding “OK” and “Home” together, but that doesn’t seem to do anything… How long do I need to hold that anyways?

Any further tips?

Any OSMC dongle (of the same remote revision) can pair with any OSMC remote.
But you can only pair one remote with one dongle at any one time. This allows operation in close proximity without interference.

Unplug the problematic dongle
Plug in known working dongle (at least known and working with your remote)

Hold Home and OK and you will get a solid blue light for a few seconds until the remote is paired. Remove the battery from your remote when you attempt this process

I suspect the dongle would be the issue rather than the remote

excellent! holding the OK and Home buttons long enough does light up the blue LED as @anardog explained, and I can reproduce the problem with my remote and their dongle, which probably means the dongle is faulty.

thanks for the references!

Yes — sounds like the dongle needs replacing.

How do I go about replacing the dongle?

Hello,

this looks like the same problem I am having with my remote. It suddenly stopped working. I see the same behaviour in my logs:

https://paste.osmc.tv/gequrozavu

I tried to repair the remote but if I hold the home and ok button the light will shine blue (not blink). I reconnect the dongle to the vero but the remote never blinks 3 times indicating it paired.

I also tried the dongle on my window 10 laptop and here it will see the dongle but as soon as I press a button on the remote the dongle disconnects from the laptop. So the only thing I can say that at least the dongle reacts to the remote.

Can anyone confirm this is problem with the dongle?

It would appear to be. I would try plugging it into the other USB port and if the behavior is the same send an email to support@osmc.tv and inquire about a replacement dongle.

@darwindesign Thanks for the info. I already tried the dongle on both USB ports. I also tried it on a Raspberry Pi running OSMC but all with the same result. I think I will take your advice and contact support.
