I updated to the latest staging release and the DV playback is still black for the files - they fallback to HDR10+ if I select āForce HDR (no DV)ā though. I will upload logs in a bit.
I am not too sure, DV playback still works fine on most of the movies but I noticed that some releases would show a black screen in DV. The 2 files do have HDR10+ fallback - but does not fallback to it unless I do a āForce HDR (no DV)ā.
I have also encountered a Black screen playback for a release thatās in MP4 but no HDR10+ fallback, just P5 - Jurassic.World.Rebirth.2025.2160p.WEB-DL.DV.P5.LATINO.FRENCH.Atmos.H265.MP4-BTM.
I did not have any issues before the March update and also cannot verify exactly when some of these issues come up as other DV movies playback file with the exception of a few - which I try to just download another release.
FYI. I tested out this specific movie via my setup [Vero V>Denon X1800-AVR>Sony A95L] and have the same effect: perfect audio (Atmos) but no interpretable image. The Sony doesnāt show a black screen but clearly canāt interprete the video signal, showing alternating green artefacts and snow.
First time I experience this. All other DVās run perfectly.
Note that it could be the mkv. AOC sometimes makes mistakes.
On the other hand, it plays on Windows correctly in VLC and subtitle edit.
Iād appreciate it if you (and @creativezane although heās possibly already tried it) could test this and provide feedback before we potentially release this as an update to other users. To test this update:
Run the following command to add the staging repository: echo 'deb http://apt.osmc.tv bullseye-devel main' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/osmc-devel.list
Go to My OSMC ā Updater ā Manual Controls ā and select Check for Updates now. When prompted to do so on screen, please choose to install the update.
Your system should have have received the update.
Please see if the issue is resolved.
I also recommend you remove /etc/apt/sources.list.d/osmc-devel.list after updating.
This will deactivate the staging repository. You can do so with the following command: sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/osmc-devel.list.
Please note that we will automatically disable this update channel after 14 days on your device in case you forget to do so to ensure that your system reverts to the stable update channel.
I have already tried updating on the latest staging release and the Black screen DV for the files still persists. Donāt see any new updates since as well.
Iām sorry to say that the side effect has become worse.
Video used: How to Train Your Dragon (2025) Hybrid DV/HDR
Situation before with official Vero V, release [2025.03-1]:
Perfect audio (Atmos) on the Denon AVR.
Sony TV canāt interprete the video signal, showing alternating green artefacts and snow - but keeps trying.
When stopping the movie, no visual (UI) errors on Kodi (skin Aeon Tajo) - behaves normally afterwards
Situation after the latest staging release:
Perfect audio (Atmos) on the Denon AVR.
Sony TV shows a black screen for 10 seconds and then restarts (you hear a click of a shutdown, and then you see the TV/Google booting) while the AVR keeps playing the audio correctly
When stopping the movie, no visual (UI) errors on Kodi (skin Aeon Tajo) - behaves normally afterwards
Denon & Sony have the latest updates and are from 2024, able to handle all formats.
I assume Iām experiencing the same use case as @creativezane now. (although other brand of TV and as such other side effect)
Well thatās ⦠unexpected. Are you now able to play most videos OK or do you want instructions to revert the changes? It will need a reinstall.
Does the AVR indicate a video signal at this point?
Before reinstalling (if needed) - can you try taking the AVR out of the chain? So far all the reports of lost signal except for @creativezaneās have involved an AVR and direct connection to a TV has been OK.
Yes, I tested out some of the other DV videos and they still play ok. Donāt need a reinstall (I hope).
Yes, like I wrote, the AVR continues to play the audio track. No interruption at all. And since itās sitting between the Vero and the TV, itās not choking on the video signal it forwards to the TV.
No error messages on the display or change in the audio. Plays perfectly.
Not easy (cable management) but I did it. (Iām on holiday today so Iāve some time this morning)
Use Case [Vero V with Staging Release > Sony A95L]:
First plugged out the TV and Vero and waited for 2 minutes before plugging them back in (CEC/EDID reset) and starting the Vero
TV plays the sound correctly
While playing the sound TV shows a black screen - for only 3 seconds now - and then restarts
After waiting until the TV restarted and stopping the movie via the remote during restart of TV, no visual (UI) errors on Kodi (skin Aeon Tajo) - behaves normally afterwards
Extra info - Use Case [Vero V with Staging Release > AVR > TV]
Used the info button of the AVR remote while the culprit video was running, but nothing appears on the black screen
Used the info button of the TV remote to show detailed signal info with the video running, but nothing appears on the black screen
Both info buttons work fine with another DV movie
Does not work if I pause the video either
I also noticed that if I pause the video after 1 second, the TV anyhow restarts after 10 seconds which means itās already in an error state from the moment the video starts playing
I just wanted to say iām having/had the same issue with the dinosaur movie stated above⦠I have not tried the dev or updated OSMC version. Forcing HDR mode helped but looked not as good as DV. Got a different encode, seems to be working fine now. With the first (bad) encode, the issue was at the exact same spot (4 mins in), next day retest of same file had issues at the very beginning. So, not consistent, and probably not an encoded file corruption. Anyway, try different encode. If it is happening on multiple movies, probably not a corruption but some new encoder setting? Just guessing.
Thinking about this, if you have certain settings in the CEC adapter, if Kodi crashes it could turn off other devices and turn them on again when it restarts. I never use CEC so Iām not sure what all those settings mean.
Although CEC is enabled on all devices, Iāve a specific setup to make sure my set top box of my local provider plays nicely with my TV, AVR and the Vero. I cannot disable CEC completely in that box (they blocked that optionā¦) but I made sure none of my devices (box, vero, AVR, TV) react to one of them being turned on or off.
So since the Kodi CEC adapter has that option disabled, I know that Kodi will not be able to force my AVR or TV to switch on or off - even if it wanted to, the TV or AVR would not act upon it because I also disabled that specific CEC option in their settings.
Iām not particularly bothered by that movie not playing in DV as it still will run in HDR modus.
Iām just curious whether these two movies are isolated cases or if they indicate the adoption of a new encoding method that we can expect to see more frequently moving forward.
You and me both. We strive to play anything, wherever it was sourced from, whatever format. But there are so many āstandardsā and plenty of examples of non-compliance even from the main distributors (eg Apple) let alone the remuxers.
