[TESTING] Linux 4.9 kernel and improved video stack for Vero 4K / 4K +

is there any jump in image quality expected for HD / Bluray Files with kernel update, like pab11 wrote?

Maybe this help, quote from Kodi forum.
" Right-eye First 3D Blu-ray’s:
Most 3D Blu-ray’s are left-eye first, but a few are authored right-eye first. This isn’t an issue for actual Blu-ray players, but can often be for Kodi and media players. For these, unless the player/app can detect right-eye first and auto-invert, you’ll need to do this manually via the player’s flip-eyes or swap-left/right function. Otherwise, the 3D picture gets displayed improperly and looks garbled (sort of like looking into a mirror with multiple cracks).

i did try the switch eyes for my tv, and all it did was switch the problem from the left eye to the right eye (after i had manually switched to top_bottom from left_right). interesting though that hobbit is in this list. i’ll also have to try boss baby and edge of tomorrow (from that list) when i get a chance to see if those have the same issue.

I can reproduce that issue here. I’ll fix it!

Awesome!

Here are the debug logs with a movie with hickups:
https://paste.osmc.tv/ixasotasac

I hope anybody can find a solution, these play fine on other devices like the Shield.

@Sam:
crda is installed (REGDOMAIN=DE),
then I entered: sudo iw reg set DE",
“sudo iw reg get” gives “global, country DE: DFS-ETSI”
“dmesg | paste-log” : https://paste.osmc.tv/filomudavu

I hope it helps!

For the HDR to SDR conversion with BT2020 is there any setting I am not seeing? I would also like to set the max nits for my projector.

Someone has written an add-on that changes the metadata manually. I can’t find it right now but it’s in here somewhere.

To me that sounds like a bad idea! The metadata is taken from the source, the movie. It is when you do tonemapping from HDR to SDR what the 4.9 kernel should be able that you need to tell Vero how much nits your display can give.

Also I just installed this version on my Vero 4K. I use my Vero 4K with the official Plex Addon, and I wanted to try this mostly to get better light (contrast I guess) on my HDR-movies (mostly 4K) on my non HDR (SDR) LG TV.

I as many others of you I also get a lot of “sad faces”. Sometimes I think that the contrast is better, and then later I do think it’s kind of dark again.

Should I do something manually of should it be able to do this automatically?

Just now when tried to start 4k hdr same snow picture appeared. I was still on version 16 of 4.9. Even other Movies gave the circle, reboot Several times without solving the issue.

Grab logs -A, no debug yet enabled.

Even updated to version 17 of 4.9. But circles and snow screen stayed the same.

Will post full log later.

https://paste.osmc.tv/omelaburol

4k started once, with sound, then second other movie failed to start, circles, no sound any more.
Later 4k started after many seconds no sound,
Same for m2ts file, no sound, stuttering.

This was not the case with version 15 and 16.

@sam_nazarko @grahamh

Is this related to the remark about knowing what caused the issue, with the latest 2 updates more circles without even a movie to start?

If deepdive is needed into my config, just let me know. Willing to help testing further.

Stupid me, but I thought that updating this way would work better than it did. What is the best way to go back? How do I do I reset and how big is that reset?

/Söder

You will need to perform a full reinstall for that…

Thanks. I should have read all that before I did the update.

Not that I got any library (since I use Plex, and got an external server), but I got some Kodi-addons, and I run an automatic downloader installed on the Vero…

Hmm, how long do you think it will take until the bigger bugs are fixed? Crashes and that loading screen on some media…

/Söder

I think it was summed up as best as it could be a couple days ago…

This is a testing build so issues are going to be present. It is very actively being worked on but I don’t think anyone can really say at this point how long it will be until most issues are resolved.

A few days.

Updated this morning and 1 video i had that wouldn’t start before is working now! Good work!!

Edit
Tried a few more and all seem to be working.

We introduced some changes yesterday which resolved some playback issues and we have since refined these changes further. Please check for updates again and report back accordingly.

Cheers

Sam

Cheers Sam
Just updated again and seems to be working well. Seems a bit dark in picture quality but room is very sun filled atm. When i get back from golf ( yeah western Australia easing restrictions) i will have a more subjective look.
Cheers again!
