[TESTING] Vero V: Dolby Vision FEL support

Personally I don’t really understand much of this stuff but lately many DV movies and TV shows started not working well so I’ve had to set Kodi to force HDR, hoping the update will allow me to watch DV again.

I hear you, everyone is chasing the “Fel”. Next up, Dolby vision 2.

Got it. Then I’ll wait for the update. Thanks.

So what you said earlier no longer applies?

To be clear, the stable release coming up will not be any different as far as FEL is concerned from the current staging build. If DV is not working for you then please give us more details.

Yeah, sorry about the confusion. I thought my new receiver fixed everything somehow but I think it was a false positive as my DV videos started not working again. I didn’t update you as I wasted enough of your time with my video segments that didn’t contain any DV encoding. I’m not on the staging build, just waiting on the sideline,.

I just ran some tests at least to give you a precise behaviour of the problem. I rewrote this message many times because I was actually getting “random” results and it took me a while to be able to reproduce the problem in a constant manner.

So, it seems there’s an internal “reset” when I restart my TV. Basically, there’s a few very specific DV videos that will display with purplish and greenish colors (while stuck in the few first frames while audio keeps going) after I restart my TV. Most of my other DV videos will play fine and here’s the catch, as soon as I play one of these videos, the “broken” videos start playing fine. That’s until I restart the TV.

Here’s what I just did a few times just to confirm I could reproduce the problem every time:

  • Restart the TV (LG OLED C2 65”)
  • Play any episode from Daredevil: Born Again S02 or play Jurassic World: Rebirth
  • It will show purplish/greenish, shows Dolby Vision logo but stuck in first frames, audio is OK.
  • There’s occasionally a forced Vero 5 restart with a sad smiley face after I play a broken video
  • Play any (or most I guess) other DV material I got, it will play fine.
  • The “broken” videos listed above will all play fine, until I restart the TV

I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful at the moment. Seems there’s very specific DV encoded videos that create these problems with my very specific TV. I don’t know how to properly extract a clip as I tried before but it didn’t carry the DV encoding and I don’t really have access to these clips from a Windows computer, my media is on my QNAP NAS.

For now, my workaround seems easy enough. Play any DV video that I know plays OK all the time, then everything will be fine at least until I restart the TV.

EDIT: Okay, I’ll try to get off my lazy ass and create a test clip with MKVToolNix from the instructions @Ainsley gave a few days ago. I got a Windows laptop that has access to my NAS through Samba. Will DM you later but this time I’ll test my clip first to make sure it contains the DV layer.

EDIT2: I finally successfully created a sample from the problematic DV video and I sent the 30 seconds sample to @grahamh , hopefully this can help somehow.

I have the same issue (with a LG G2 77 inch). Resetting the Vero V seems to solve the issue as well.

Did you mean restarting the Vero 5? In my case, restarting Vero 5 won’t help, just tried. The faulty video will still fail after reboot (unless I play a non problemartic DV video beforehands, then it’s all rainbow and unicorns).

Your method was necessary once with the last season of Slow horses. I had tot play an other non-problematic DV file first (after the reset of The Vero V) in order to make the problematic file to work. I will test some other files tonight.

Greetings

Well today

I joined the club and locally ran the script for the test file. Used pUTTY and followed Sam’s instructions. Played Bugonia (DV P8.1) with no problems. More testing this week.

Haven’t received the update yet. Did anyone else get? (I might just be confusing time zones and it might not he tomorrow yet)

I did post with crossed fingers. Not sure what the hold-up is but Sam’s working on it.

Thanks for testing. Do you have the same behaviour as posted above, ie bad colours if the first video played after a Vero or TV reset but better if played after a DV video that plays OK?

Do you get the same behaviour if you just switch inputs on the AVR to another source then switch back to Vero?

Does ‘restart’ mean turn off and turn on or just go to standby and then wake up?

Can you do this, please?

  • re-boot Vero
  • restart the TV (or switch AVR inputs if that does it)
  • post a log - without playing any videos
  • play a ‘bad’ video and post another log

TIA

Ah well. Understandable.

The update is now out. See: OSMC's May update is here with Dolby Vision FEL support - OSMC

Thanks for all of those that tested.

Cheers

Sam

Great update, where I was just getting a black screen before I now have working playback!

Now that CE has released DV FEL on the latest nightly. What is the big difference between OSMC and CE support?

There nightly also supports DV L5.

Can the pathed drivers also be implemented into OSMC? Since it works on amlogic.

Having all the supported levels would be awesome!

I see there’s some discussion there about where to show the OSD. By default, the progress bar will get blacked out by the level 5 matte. Options are:

  • turn off level 5 when the OSD is on, or
  • squash the OSD into the region that the video occupies

What do you think?
