Woah… where have I been that I missed this.
I will test this right away on my LG OLED!
EDIT: So I SSH’d in and did the update, my V booted into a sad face, but then automatically reset the media center/kodi and was up and running.
I tested a couple of DV UHD remuxes I have done with MakeMKV and they all triggered the Dolby Vision badge in the upper right hand corner of my LG OLED.
I also tried the movie Clue which I have as just the full backup folder so I can chose the various endings that seamless provides on that disc and it triggered the Dolby Vision badge as well.
Next, I “acquired” a file from a web streaming service that has the following profile: Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, Profile 8.1, dvhe.08.06, BL+RPU, no metadata compression, HDR10 compatible / SMPTE ST 2094 App 4, Version HDR10+ Profile B, HDR10+ Profile B compatible
and it triggered the badge as well.
I will have to hunt down a DV file with no backup HDR and test that too but so far everything seems to work as expected on my end.
DD+ with Atmos on the WEB file worked and so did the UHD’s TrueHD Atmos and I found no issues so far with SRT and PGS subtitles either.
EDIT2: So I “acquired” an Apple file with and without HDR fall back and here is what I get:
HDR format : Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, Profile 8.1, dvhe.08.06, BL+RPU, no metadata compression, HDR10 compatible / SMPTE ST 2094 App 4, Version HDR10+ Profile B, HDR10+ Profile B compatible
HDR format : Dolby Vision, Version 1.0, dvhe.05.06, BL+RPU
The videos are poor quality from my cell phone but you get the idea.
And both versions have horrible skin tones with day glow orange highlights in certain areas as mentioned in other posts.
I tried that inverted black and whites test file from a previous post and it’s messed up on my setup as well.
Thanks for that. We know what the problem is and it’s not limited to Apple content. We’ll fix it while working on some other optimisations for P5 tonemapping.
Can confirm that with several examples of Apple content, the opening screen (Apple TV logo) and credits have inverted blacks and whites. But not always, oddly.
Is there tonemapping involved in this solution when connected to displays capable of TV led Dolby Vision? I did not think there was, considering it activates DV mode. I own a Vero 4K, so I cannot test.
So now that I have had more experience with DV content on the Vero V I have to say that in it’s current state it is unbearable for me to watch.
The coloring issues are really bad and frequent from my experience.
Assuming this issue can be fixed, DV has great potential on the V, but until then I am leaving it disabled for normal viewing.
I’ll turn it on to test stuff out and try to help the community etc but it’s just not ready for prime time as they say.
I watched my UHD remux of 12 Monkeys from Arrow that has DV tonight and right away in the snow DV is all messed up and it is too distracting so I turned it off.
It’s DV Profile 7.6 as expected from a UHD remux done by MakeMKV.
I have tried some Profile 8.1 made from UHD remuxes done by people on the internet and the same issues occur, as it also does with Profile 5 WEB files.
Anywhere you can see a fine gradient, places where BDs would usually struggle with banding, UHD excels but the DV implementation is borked in these areas as it currently stands.
Specular highlights in the sky or terrain, on skin and clothing, etc. all suffer from this issue.
I sure hope you guys figure it out because the potential for DV is very promising.
And anything I can do to help test or trouble shoot I am more than happy to help out with.
I’ve already made a few clips for testing purposes.
Interesting. It would be good to work out why your experience is different from others in this thread. There is a known issue with some Profile 5 streams which we’ve fixed but not yet pushed the patch. There’s also a patch which disables user settings of YUV422 or full-range quantisation which hasn’t yet been published so if you have either of those set you will get a mess on screen. If Profile 7s are not rendering properly, that’s odd because all we are doing is passing through the stream and adding in the display management metadata.
If you have one of your 12 Monkeys, can you share that?
All clips are 30 seconds.
The 12 Monkeys clips (Profile 7.6) show the issue in the snow around the man hole.
The Fly Me to the Moon clips (Profile 5 and 8.1) have the issue on her skin in the bar, most noticeably on her cheek but also on other areas of the skin.
The Gattaca slip (Profile 8.1) should be painfully obvious with the blue band.
The issue is the same thing across all DV profiles, not just Profile 5.
^ same as mentioned here.
Now profile 5 has even more issues, like inverted black and whites, the red as seen in my previous shared video and you can see that same issue on the Fly Me to the Moon Profile 5 clip on the lower left side when it shows the street there are a bunch of artifacts in the car’s grille.
The issue which manifests over all profiles is the gradient issue most noticeable on skin and the like.
EDIT: I double checked and I do not have “Force 422 colour subsampling” enabled and “Use limited colour range (16-235)” is enabled since I am using a TV and not a PC monitor.
I’m seeing the same issue. Another easy example is in the beginning of Aliens (1986) when the letter “I” in the Aliens logo starts glowing. TV is an LG B7.
Thanks for those, guys. I can see all the issues on my Philips OLED except not sure what I’m looking for in the snow. Edit: I can now see the shadowed bits are more blocky than when played on other devices.
Can you confirm it’s only when DV is ‘turned on’ that you see these effects? ie Profile 5 output as HDR10 is still OK?
The 12 Monkeys snow is not as noticeable as the Gattaca or Aliens intro, so it might be easier for you to focus on those two and forget about the snow in the 12 Monkeys clips.
I’m pretty sure it’s the same issue so I imagine if an update fixes what we see in the Gattaca and Aliens intros then I’m sure the 12 Monkeys snow will be fixed as well.
Yes, profile 5 has the issue you saw in the car grill, inverted black and whites, etc.
Very obvious artifacts in profile 5.
And thankfully that issue is bound to profile 5.
The gradients issue appears to be something different all together and spans all profile versions.
At this point in time, do you guys see a pathway for FEL being implemented at some point after these first issues get worked out or is there a hardware limitation of some sorts?
