UHD films now buffering

Hi, in the last 3 months UHD films have struggled to play from both my hard drives and i get buffering. Films that recently played fine now buffer and stop playing. Usually when films will not play/buffer my hard drives makes a clicking sound that only happens when connected to Vero 4K+. My tv plays the files from the same hard drives without any problems/noises. Any ideas on how to fix.

Thanks
Mike

To get a better understanding of the problem you are experiencing we need more information from you. The best way to get this information is for you to upload logs that demonstrate your problem. You can learn more about how to submit a useful support request here.

Depending on the used skin you have to set the settings-level to standard or higher, in summary:

  • enable debug logging at settings->system->logging

  • reboot the OSMC device twice(!)

  • reproduce the issue

  • upload the log set (all configs and logs!) either using the Log Uploader method within the My OSMC menu in the GUI or the ssh method invoking command grab-logs -A

  • publish the provided URL from the log set upload, here

Thanks for your understanding. We hope that we can help you get up and running again shortly.

How are you powering the drives?

USB port on Vero.

You need to use a powered USB hub (such as 4 Port USB 3.0 Powered Hub - OSMC) or make sure your drive has an external power supply.

This will solve the issue.

Been using the port to power drives for last 2+ years with no problems.

Thanks for the quick reply’s and help Sam.

Ordered the hub you linked to.

Hi Sam, the USB hub (such as 4 Port USB 3.0 Powered Hub - OSMC has not resolved the buffering problem.

Sorry to hear that. You would need to use a powered hub anyway.
I would suggest posting some debug logs so we can see what the issue is

Sam

The problem occurs 90% of the time and only with UHD content. I will follow the guide you had posted previously and send you debug logs.

Seen this in another post. We recommend people with 4K TV’s set their user interface (UI) to 1080p. Kodi’s UI is not optimized for 4K yet and this can put unnecessary demands on your device and can lead to a suboptimal picture quality, as well as potentially cause other issues.
I have mine set at 4k, could this be causing the problems?

Normally I would not expect it to be related to buffering. But your setting surely is not ideal. Just reposting the recommended one.

We recommend people with 4K TV’s set their user interface (UI) to 1080p. Kodi’s UI is not optimized for 4K yet and this can put unnecessary demands on your device and can lead to a suboptimal picture quality, as well as potentially cause other issues.

The settings we recommend are as follows…

Settings>System>Display>Resolution> 1920x1080p
Settings>System>Display>Whitelist> (empty) *
Settings>Player>Videos>Adjust display refresh rate> On start/stop

Some televisions may also need, or benefit from, the following being set…

System>Display>Force 4:2:2 colour subsampling> (enable)

With the above settings your UI will be output in Full HD and your 4K content will be output in 4K. *Information regarding the whitelist can be found here. If you have any doubt, feel free to upload some logs so we can verify that your settings are indeed correct.

The log is showing USB resets on the disk, eg:

Mar 29 15:00:14 osmc kernel: usb 1-1.3: reset high-speed USB device number 4 using xhci-hcd
Mar 29 15:00:14 osmc kernel: xhci-hcd xhci-hcd.0.auto: Setup ERROR: setup context command for slot 3.

These can occur due to cable or hardware problems. One other possibility is that it’s using the USB 3 driver, xhci-hcd, which tended to have a few problems earlier on. (The Vero4K+ is currently on kernel 3.14.)

From the log I can see that there was a kernel update on 2020-11-08, so, though you mention the problem occurring “in the last 3 months”, if it is driver-related, it could have started 4+ months ago.

Bottom line: it could be hardware- or driver-related. If the latter, it might be fixed in the forthcoming 4.9 kernel.

Hi, Thanks. I doubt it is cable related as both hard drives have same problems on Vero but are fine when connected to the TV or pc. When will the new Kernel be released? Can you roll back to previous Kernel?

The USB driver has been static for years however, so if it worked for OP before, I can’t see this being the issue.

Can you try the alternate USB port on the Vero?

Sam

Hi Sam, i will give that a try and update you.

Tried other usb port, played ok but hard drive started clicking 80% of the way through movie and at end of movie Vero froze for a few seconds.

Are you still using the USB Hub with the external power supply?
