Freezing/Crashing after last update

Hey everyone,

Since the update yesterday, I’ve had somewhat frequent system crashes (I think twice yesterday, 3-4 times today). I’m mostly watching Twitch streams via the Twitch Kodi addon and everything will just freeze mid-stream. Video frozen, Audio repeating the last millisecond of output in a loop. Not possible to ssh into the Vero at that point, it completely disappears from my wifi. Only power cycle brings it back.

I caught it with debug logs enabled around 20:15 CEST:

Any ideas?

Can you disable WiFi and try Ethernet temporarily?

Sure, I’ll give it a go

I have the same issue. Freezes randomly during streaming after updating to Kodi 21. I reinstalled my addons clean from scratch, but still the same issue. I also tried better cooling for the Vero V, but did not improve. I hope this can be resolved soon.

I need some more information from you to be able to advise

Sure. What do you need? .kodi/temp/kodi.log?

A full set of logs would be useful. I am curious if you are using WiFi.

I’m seeing the same behavior post-update. Using WiFi (on the 5ghz band) and consistenly happens after some time of watching via the HDHomeRun PVR addon.

Reinstalled the prior version from the OSMC downloads page and so far no issues.

Do you have a link handy for what files I should pull to get a full set of logs to send?

I’ve got what I need now. I will push a fix tomorrow.

Thanks for confirming you are on WiFi.

It’s late here but I have done my best to push a solution before bed.

It seems we didn’t quite get enough testing of some WiFi changes I made a while ago.

This should now be resolved.

We have also taken the opportunity to resolve an issue where video playback can freeze when seeking somewhat aggressively (several times consecutively). This was a separate issue.

You should receive the update shortly. I’d appreciate it if you could confirm this has solved the issue for you. If things aren’t resolved do let me know so I can verify that you have indeed received the update

Cheers,

Sam

Thanks for the quick turnaround! I checked for updates and installed.

So far I was able to play an hour long video via the YouTube addon with no issue, but after ~10 minutes or so of a PVR stream it hit the bug and stuck + repeated the last clip of audio over and over.

You haven’t posted any logs so I’m not sure if you indeed applied this update correctly,

If you have, I’d suggest trying the previous version of OSMC and checking if the problem still occurs

Sam

Hi Sam, a lot has happend here over night. You even pushed a fix, that is trully amazing. Thanks a lot!

Yes I am using WiFi. I downloaded the fix and I am testing it out now. Playing the same movie that freezed all the time yesterday. If you want I can still send you my logfiles if it still might happen again, but I am not sure which files you want more.

I will let you know shortly if the issue has been resolved. Thx.

Unfortunately, it freezed again within a few minutes of streaming the movie. I enabled debugging and uploaded the logfiles. If there is something else you need, then let me know.

FYI, I backup-ed and restored the same Kodi setup from Vero V to my old Vero 4K (also on Kodi 21) and on the Vero 4K it seems to work without any issues.

Unfortunately those logs don’t show anything and seem to be from a fresh boot of OSMC with debugging enabled after the freeze.

I have restored WiFi to how it was prior to the update, so any WiFi related issue should be resolved; but would be curious if Ethernet solves it. I notice you are using a VPN which also adds another variable.

I enabled debugging, rebooted and started the movie. Then it froze in the first few minutes. So I had to recycle the power to get into the OSMC app to upload the logs. Hence not enabled debugging after the freeze. I have a screen image of the freeze where you can see that debugging is enabled.
I sent the image to you by email.

I can try to create a log again, but maybe the system crashes and is no longer able to write the log? Also before the update it also froze like this, but only once in a few months so I didn’t bother to report it. After the update it freezes so often that I have to recycle power several times during one movie.

I will try to see if it also happens via an utp cable, but it is not a permanent solution for me as I am using Starlink and need to find a very long cable from my router to my tv.

I didn’t get the image you sent by email as it was too large. You can upload images on this forum however by clicking the upload button

Found the upload button.

I finished playing the test movie on Vero4K WiFi without issues.

Now connected VeroV wired to a Deco Pod and restarted the same movie. I will let you know shortly wether the freeze also happens with the wired connection and if so, send the logs. Thanks for your support.

Vero 4K and V have different WiFi modules.

I am still troubleshooting some long standing WiFi issues. So far the commonality seems to be mesh networking or band steering.

Have you recently changed the WiFi network environment?
