NO HEVC support since upgrade to 19.1

Hello,

I just upgraded my OSMC to 2021.08-1 (Kodi 19.1 - Matrix), and I have two problems which i encountered:

  1. There’s no Eminence skin, and all other skins (for my taste) simply suck… is it possible to download it somehow externally, or only via “more skins”? Or maybe there’s some substitute?

  2. Much more serious problem - i cannot play x265 files (only audio works) which worked perfectly on v18
It’s “Scrubs” (43GB pack of the whole series from a “popular site” - DETAILS BELOW!)

Any suggestions?
…or should I just revert to v18?

Thanks in advance,
R.

HI,

Doesn’t look its been updated for Matrix, you will need to contact the developer for Eminence skin. Unfortunately we can’t help with this.

To get a better understanding of the problem you are experiencing we need more information from you. The best way to get this information is for you to upload logs that demonstrate your problem. You can learn more about how to submit a useful support request here.

Depending on the used skin you have to set the settings-level to standard or higher, in summary:

  • enable debug logging at settings->system->logging

  • reboot the OSMC device twice(!)

  • reproduce the issue

  • upload the log set (all configs and logs!) either using the Log Uploader method within the My OSMC menu in the GUI or the ssh method invoking command grab-logs -A

  • publish the provided URL from the log set upload, here

Thanks for your understanding. We hope that we can help you get up and running again shortly.

Ok, just a quick update for now…

Ad.1 - As for problem #1 (no skin for v19), it is (i hope so, still testing) semi-solved. I found a suggestion that “Arctic: Zephyr -Reloaded” is a good substitute …and so far (approx. 45m of testing it works pretty good for me - there are some minor bugs, but it also adds a lot of options). So this issue …well, not solved …but “paused” - i would mark

Ad.2 - This seems to be a bigger problem then I expected as I just found that NONE of my x265 files works right. Only some “glitchy” parts of menu are visible + audio goes - i can pause, stop, exit etc. but no video.

I will provide the right logs from that event tommorow, as right now i am falling asleep standing…

Good night to everyone

Ok, so I found a second to start my RPI and reproduce the error:

  • at approx. 18:13 i turned RPi on (OFC: I CUT THAT PART OF THE LOG),
  • then I waited till 18:23 (maybe the very end of 18:22) and went straight to running “Scrubs”
  • It was going for approx 1 minute - at first only audio + “Please wait”, then at the bottom of the screen a menu/line(?) also appeared but it was only signed “Buffering 100%”
  • then i stopped the clip, which worked no problem and went straight to turning off the device and copying the log

INFO: In notepad (only 3 places) I renamed my external drive’s name to “MY_EXTERNAL_DRIVE” because it was named with my real-life name!

Ok, and here goes the LOG - have fun  …to me - it could be in Chinese, I don’t get a thing

P.S. And also one additional question - does anyone that installed a “fresh” version of 19.1 is able to run HEVC/x265. Cause if so - i will just make a fresh install instead of tinkering with code etc.

That’s why devs and mods always ask for full debug logs.

UPDATE: I just installed “fresh” and “clean” (no add-ons etc.) version of 19.1 ona different SD card and it produces EXACTLY the same results when trying to play anything HEVC/x265 :frowning:

…so I guess now it’s time for rebuilding my previous OSMC on Leia…

…unless someone has a solution/fix for this…

EDIT: Also I just realized that I was supposed to turn on debug logging etc. and all I gave is just a “simple log” right? …but now that I checked that it’s behaving the same on a fresh install it should be a problem for everyone on 19.1 and 3b+, and therefore it’s not needed any more

…I might be wrong though, if it is so then correct me.

EDIT #2: Also there’s already a topic regarding HEVC problems here:

…so, I guess admin should merge them/close one (IDK what forum admins do in such a situation). BTW: I changed the topic - removed no support for eminence skin, as I found that “Arctic: Zephyr - Reloaded” is a good (although not as complete) alternative for now.

Ok guys, just to inform you - as there is no clear solution, I OFFICIALLY reverted to 18.9, turned off updates and I’m now patiently waiting for this problem to be solved (…maybe in 19.2 o smth).

Will watch closely how this unfolds though…

Bye:)

Same problem here. Most of my videos won’t play so now OSMC is useless. Any fixes for this in near future or should I downgrade?

@bbigk Please ignore, posted without realising it was for pi3.

HEVC on Pi 3 is likely as good as it’s going to get. You may wish to downgrade.

I don’t fully understand what you’re trying to say…

Are you saying that Matrix (v19) is designed for RPi 4, and if I have RPi 3b+ and I want to watch HEVC files (on Matrix - v19) the only way is to upgrade my HARDWARE?

That would make no sense as Matrix is not light years from Leia (v18), and IF Leia can run those HEVC files i really do not understand why Matrix CAN’T and would require a HARDWARE UPGRADE?

I hope I just misunderstood you, because that would go against all principles of Rasperry Pi/Open-Source/NON-big-tech solutions (where with every new version of software you need [FOR NO GOOD REASON] to buy a new mobile phone/computer etc])

Regarding of my “guess” of what you were trying to say - did anyone with RPi 4 reported that HEVC is running with no problems or do they encounter the same problems?

If you’d bothered to read this, you might be able to understand.

To be scrupulously fair, there isn’t actually any mention of HEVC in there.

Take it up with Raspberry Pi or Team Kodi who made these technical decisions, not us. Writing in capital letters just makes you look like an idiot. We warned users about changes on numerous occasions and did our best to manage expectations. You cannot blame us for these changes. Either stay on Leia or change hardware – but don’t blame us.

Kodi v18 and before used MMAL, and the Pi had a hack which despite not having an HEVC acceleration block, allowed the VideoCore’s QPUs to be utilised in a way that could improve decode performance. This was not fully accelerated. This is now gone due to the move to V4L2/GBM.

Pi 4 has a dedicated HEVC block on the VPU, so can of course decode HEVC.

You bought a Pi 3B+ which doesn’t advertise support for HEVC at all, we all made it work with some hacks, and when it can’t work anymore, you blame us.

We do not control the Pi software stack. MMAL is a proprietary and closed decoding stack supported by Broadcom and Raspberry Pi which Kodi decided to deprecate support for. It is not open source.

We only control the Vero stack. For other devices which we support under a best effort basis, we can only deal with what we are given. Pi firmware is a complete black box for us and we have no access to it.

No one has taken anything away from you. The software you had before updating is still available and still functional. You can choose whether to upgrade.

Did you just weigh in on this topic to tell me whether I should’ve used the word idiot or not with nothing else to contribute?

If you know me and have seen my participation on this forum, I’ve a very, very high threshold for things. But sometimes calling someone an idiot is enough of a jolt to remind someone that they have been a bit of an entitled …

We both spent a lot of time talking to each other about the use of the word ‘idiot’. I consider this a waste of time.

If OP is really upset, I am sure he will get back to us.

Unlike you (and many others, so I’m not singling you out) – I put a real, full name behind my posts, so I stand by what I say. Posts are made with careful consideration.

Waste of time? Understood.

Troll intent? No.

Contribution? Diplomacy of a fashion.

Concentration, focus issues prevented more balanced post. Mea culpa.

User / real names? Fair point asked myself before … still no answer

Great shame net’s a very poor excuse for communicating human intent, emotions, thoughts in general.

Post deletion seems appropriate.

Congrats on putting yourself out there with OSMC. Sometimes very difficult?

Hi there,

I didn’t have time to answer, sorry…

Take it up with Raspberry Pi or Team Kodi who made these technical decisions, not us. Writing in capital letters just makes you look like an idiot.

Ok, first about that - I wrote some words in capital letters just so that it will be more visible. If you’re wondering if i feel offended by you calling me and idiot - I AM NOT OFFENDED  - I know my value, and as specific details of decoding/encoding might be a nuance for me I do have some knowledge that you (probably) do not have. I was writing in capital letters not because I was mad at someone/upset with the situation, but only to highlight the main issues. Period. Full stop.

  1. About the whole situation - i simply do not understand it. I know that big-tech ramps up their hardware requirements for bigger profit - but that’s not the “Linux way”! I cannot comprehend (AND I AM SURE I’M NOT ALONE IN THIS).

Let’s follow a simple logic:
Why [software A] + [hardware A] = [perfect result], but suddenly the same hardware is incapable to work the way it did with “old methods” on a new software. If that was the case - there should be NO UPDATE (!!!) for RPI 3B+ …because without HEVC RPi 3B+ is 50% useless (in my case) …I got cought off-guard because I always trusted OSMC updates - but surprise, surprise!

  1. You mentioned that :

Kodi v18 and before used MMAL, and the Pi had a hack which despite not having an HEVC acceleration block, allowed the VideoCore’s QPUs to be utilised in a way that could improve decode performance. This was not fully accelerated. This is now gone due to the move to V4L2/GBM.

…simple question - why can’t there be two versions of OSMC …or even better - why Matrix cannot support both MMAL and V4L2/GBM (there are already many …many versions for differnet hardware) - that would include those options that have been cut out of Matrix?

I just don’t get it - sorry, it makes no logical sense and cuts a lot of people (that owned RPI 3B+ and enjoyed HEVC for a long time) from upgrading to Matrix (which might be fun)

AND FOR DISCLOSURE - I don’t know if you’re a dev/admin or anyone else - i am just making my statement public, that’s all! I AM NOT ATTACKING ANYONE.

cya all later

Maintaining extra versions of OSMC would require far more development effort and slow down the rate of progress in the other branches. There aren’t many people who work on OSMC, and they are volunteers, working in their spare time. There aren’t a lot of man-hours to spare.

Also, in order to continue supporting MMAL, etc. the “alternative” version of OSMC would have to continue using Kodi v18 forever - long after development work on Kodi v18 had ended, long after everyone had stopped working on add ons that are compatible with Kodi v18. You can’t keep on actively supporting a dead platform when everyone else has moved on from it.

And it’s worth remembering that the release of OSMC from last November hasn’t disappeared. If you want to run it, you can. You’ll be stuck on Kodi v18, but maybe that’s worth it to you. It’s your call.

That’s a good question. Why don’t you ask the Kodi development team that? There’s no point in asking Sam and the OSMC guys that because it is not under their control. The kodi dev team as a whole makes these decisions, and Sam by himself can’t override them. Maybe he would like Kodi v19 to support MMAL, but the fact is that it doesn’t, and he can’t change that. You’re ranting about things that the OSMC guys have no ability to change.

And it isn’t just the Kodi dev team that is implicated here, incidentally; the Raspberry Pi Foundation is involved too. In principle there is no reason why MPEG2, VC-1, and MVC 3D cannot be hardware-accelerated under V4L2/GBM; but the Pi guys haven’t enabled support for that yet. They may or may not do so at some point in the future; but again, that is not under the control of Sam and the OSMC guys, so there’s no point in complaining to him about it.

Since support for 1st gen AppleTV, Vero 2, and Raspberry Pi 1 and Zero has now ended, there are three active versions right now - Vero 4K/4K+, Pi 2/3, and Pi 4/400. That isn’t “many”.

So you want Sam and the guys to create their own version of Kodi from the ground up? Really?

Sam is the OSMC head honcho. The original version was his project and he’s in overall charge.

Ok, that answer actually shed some light (no disrespect for previous answers), and honestly, for me (and many more, as I guess) it’s is plain, simple answer - with availability of RPI4 we abandoned support for many options (even basic, by which I mean HEVC) to spend our (devs) time on a “new on the block” solution.

But in that case my opinion is that (and yes, i will use case letters ;)) - THERE SHOULD BE NO MORE SUPPORT FOR RPI3B+ (and ESPECIALLY no auto-updates) because for Matrix it simple cripples the system after and update.

SO… long story short:

YES FOR THIS:
Raspberry Pi 4 / 400
2021.08-1|b1f72afc4537e5293ea8908ebb722ef5|

AND NO MORE THIS:
Raspberry Pi 2 / 3 / 3+
2021.08-1|2490bfb5994077d2db12203b8edcce6e|

…there should be some sort of information (instead of an update) for non-power-users (not that I consider myself a power-user):

“FROM DD.MM.YYYY YOUR HARDWARE [RPI 3B+] IS NO LONGER SUPPORTED - IF YOU WISH TO INSTALL A NEW VERSION OF OSMC BE AWARE THAT IT MIGHT NOT WORK PROPERLY”

And I would also mark it really visible on the website’s download page

That’s my few words - I hope it will help somehow to see the issue from a perspective of a day-to-day user which (just like me) with no hesitation chose YES when asked for installing a new version (as it previeusly had no isuues whatsoever).

Cya later …gotta go to back to my DAW music designing stuff - …gotta make $$$

I really have no idea how you could read my post and interpret it that way. That bears no resemblance to what I said.

The OSMC guys are continuing to support the Pi 2 and 3 to the fullest extent that is technically possible. But decisions made by the Kodi dev team and the Raspberry Pi Foundation (and not by the OSMC team) have sharply limited what can be done on that platform under Kodi v19.

Also, don’t forget that the Pi 2 and 3 do not have hardware support for HEVC. If you bought a Pi 2 or 3 for the purpose of playing HEVC videos, then frankly, you bought the wrong device. Under Kodi v18 (or earlier?) Sam came up with a clever proprietary solution that extended the device’s abilities beyond what it was designed to do - a nice bonus for OSMC users. But for Matrix the Kodi dev team changed the architecture of Kodi in such a way that Sam’s solution cannot work any more. This is not something you can blame Sam for.

Stop blaming OSMC for decisions made by other people that they have no control over.
