Vero 2 freezing (on black screen) when i click "stop" to exit a show/movie

As Sam wrote use for a test the google DNS 8.8.8.8

echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf

I just have a vpn client on my desktop, I havent changed anythign on my router for it.

i should double check how its set up on the rpi and see if its different/.

apologies, i misread it.

osmc@osmc:~$ echo “nameserver 8.8.8.8” | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 8.8.8.8
osmc@osmc:~$
osmc@osmc:~$

Now re-run the apt command

Pretty sure my rpi had the directories added by ip and I just used a shared workgroup /homegroup on the vero.

Ive edited the source for my TV shows and letting it rescan all the files which will take a while.

I’ll let you know if it’s fixed anything.

My Suggestion is first to figure out what your DNS/Network issues are before rescanning the library.

Changing to ip hasn’t seemed to fix it.

It seems to happen a bit less though but it’s still happening.

Ive just been watching westworld and the ui got stuck on the screen for a while till I eventually switched the power off and on for the vero.

Did you try changing the name server as recommended? That should fix your apt get issue as well.

if by that you mean changing my sources on the vero from e.g. smb/jarrard-desktop/movies2 to smb/192.168.1.1./movies2 then yes i’ve done that.

That’s not quite what I meant.

I was also interesting in resolving the apt-get issue. It indicates a problem with your DNS, and possibly an overall network issue.

Please see some of the suggestions above.

sorry, which suggestion in particular are you referring to?

But I still believe that the DNS server is not your fundamental problem.
Did you disable your VPN?
Did you do the longterm iperf test?

i’ll give it another go.

disabling the vpn made no difference at all.

couldnt install the iperf to run it.

When you tried to run those commands there were DNS errors from apt-get update, that’s why I suggested changing the nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf. It would be useful to see the output of

echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf
sudo apt-get update
cat /etc/resolv.conf # to verify it was set

It seems you have a network issue; either between V2 to switch or between your router and the outside world.

Sam

my configuration is.

vero > wired > modem router.
modem router > internal apartment wiring > Switch > PC

also, please remember, i do not experience any of these issues at all with the Rpi2 running OSMC which has the exact same configuration for how its wired.

Are you sure it’s the same?

You said:

It’s pretty clear you have a VPN configuration somewhere on the network and it’s causing DNS resolution problems at the least.

What was the output of the above suggested commands?

I’ll have a look at the rpi2 when i get home and check its IP settings on the box itself and match vero to it if its different. i’m just running this stuff through my phone remoted to my PC at the moment.

osmc@osmc:~$ echo “nameserver 8.8.8.8” | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 8.8.8.8

i’m currently running the apt-get but its returning all err or ign so far.

Ign means it’s up to date
Err can depend on the repository. For OSMC it sometimes means you are just being redirected to a mirror. But it’s safe to ignore.

But it sounds like it’s now resolving, and you’re not getting:

Something wicked happened resolving 'ftp.debian.org:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname)

right?

That would mean you have a DNS problem somewhere on your network. It’s best to fix the network issue, as it’s almost certainly responsible for your streaming problems too. DNS needs to be set up properly so you can get updates and connect to the Internet too.

What I suggested above was only temporary, and to confirm whether DNS was the issue. It seems to be. Make sure you use a good reliable DNS server in your router config, if you can change these settings. OpenDNS or Google are good.

I’m really not sure how your network is configured.

It seems that you are logging in to the Vero 2 via your DNS server? Are you running a custom DNS server / gateway (I assume you are not logging in from your router)

Do you think it’s possible to give me SSH access so I can poke around? Change the default osmc password.
