Vero 4k stutter with some dvb-t streams since nov. update

Hi!
some of my channels have heavy “stutter” since the november update:
https://vimeo.com/654646780
audio is fine…

here’s the kodi logs:
https://pastebin.com/QK6XDg6C

i heave tvheadend server on my unraid and stream it to my vero with the tvheadend plugin.
the channels work fine when i stream them on my windows machine (with vlc).
the problem appears only with 4 dvb-t channels (total dvb-t channels ~10), dvb-s channels all work fine.

obviously it’s the channels my wife needs the most
any help appreciated :grinning:

Can you upload full logs?

Are recordings affected?

recordings have the same problem.

hey sam, were you able to take a look at my logs? (did i get the right one?)

I saw a lot of network errors, but couldn’t see an attempt to play a recording from local storage.

Can you send a problematic recording so I can reproduce?

Thanks

Sam

i don’t know what to say…
i tried to reproduce the problem, but after several reboots and “hardware reboots” (disconnecting power source) the problem disappeared. sorry for the trouble

Just to say I have a very similar issue Live TV plabyback issue (black screen) - #6 by GoldenEyes - wondering if it’s the tuner?

@sam_nazarko
my problem is back, worse than ever (on all channels, also dvb-s).
tried a completely new setup (reinstalling osmc), still the same…
here’s my log: https://paste.osmc.tv/eniliteruv

  1. made a record
  2. tried to watch the record (stutters)
  3. played the channel (stutters)

i don’t understand this at all. on my fire stick the channels work without any problems (over wifi)…

oh man…
now also videos from my nas have problems.
last episode picture began to stutter and then froze, while sound went on…
https://paste.osmc.tv/arefokinoj
guess my device is dying?

edit: could this be sd-card related?

Hi,

I don’t think your device is failing.

Thanks for providing some logs.

Can you try checking for updates? There’s a newer kernel in the repository which fixes some Ethernet throughput issues. This could explain some issues with playback from your NAS.

If this doesn’t help, I can look further

Sam

iirc i got (and installed) an update yesterday before files from NAS began to freeze / stutter. checked again now > no updates available.

I assume @sam_nazarko wanted to suggest one of the testing versions

Hi

Hopefully the issue is now addressed with the following commit:

I’d appreciate it if you could test this and provide feedback before we potentially release this as an update to other users. To test this update:

  1. Login via the command line
  2. Run the following command to add the staging repository:
    echo 'deb http://apt.osmc.tv buster-devel main' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/osmc-devel.list
  3. Run the following commands to update: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade && reboot
  4. Your system should have have received the update.

Please see if the issue is resolved.

I also recommend you remove /etc/apt/sources.list.d/osmc-devel.list after updating.

I’d also recommend you deactivate the staging repository. You can do so with the following command:
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/osmc-devel.list.

Please note that we will automatically disable this update channel after 14 days on your device in case you forget to do so to ensure that your system reverts to the stable update channel.

made the update as suggested, but the problems were still all there:

  • stutter on livetv dvb-t2 via (external) tvheadend server
  • movie freeze (with audio still going on)

here’s the log: https://paste.osmc.tv/eteyezoviz
iirc first i watched dvb-t (stutters), the dvb-s (always over tvheadend server, no problems), then mkv over mysql/nfs (freeze after ~ 5 minutes)

afterwards i checked for updates (via osmc menu) where an update was found and installed (not sure if i was supposed to do this after the things you recommended (i have no yet deactivated the staging repository or removed the *.list file).
tried with the same movie again, but the freeze came again after ~5mins: https://paste.osmc.tv/umohebimac

edit:
i was thinking if something form my old setup (before i made a clean install, see post 8) was missing and i took a look at my old advanced settings… i hadn’t inserted this piece (bc i was thinking there shouldn’t be anything to do with a fresh setup…):

	<cache>
		<buffermode>1</buffermode>
		<memorysize>524288000</memorysize>
		<readfactor>4</readfactor>
	</cache>

copied this into the AS.xml just now and tried to watch a tv show and for a while it went well, then two minor stutter (in ~ half an hour) but in the end the picture froze again…
the dvb-t livetv problem remains completely the same.

There shouldn’t be any need to change the default setting.

That could indicate a network issue have you tried access the NAS from the Vero just after the Video freezes?
Have you tried to playback the file that stops after 5 minutes locally on the Vero from a USB Stick/Disc?

Maybe something changed in the network, we suggest to check your network with iperf3. Please read this howto

what can i say? :elf:
i had this setting in the last years on my vero4k (can’t really remember why) and it worked, so i tried it again. and the freeze came later with this setting…

well, i can watch the same video on a amz fire stick (over wifi with “not so good signal”) without problems.

i can try this in the evening…

nothing changed in the network (well. i didn’t change anything, maybe a component has problems?).

looks good as far as i can see… same results without -R > iperf3 -c <IP of your iperf3-server>

today i made a recording from one of the dvb-t channels i’m having problems with on my fire stick (same setup kodi matrix over unraid/tvheadend) where i have absolutely no problems. the recording plays fine on fire stick. but when i play the recording on my vero4k it’s the same stutter as mentioned in my OP.

don’t know if this helps, but i’ll also post the mediainfo of the 2 video files and 1 recording:

hope something of all this information helps

ok, copied the 3 files to an usb drive (and deleted the chache part - see post 14).
the tvheadend livetv recording from the other kodi client (where livetv and the recording played just fine) on the vero4k has exactly the same problems as over livetv or when i make a recording on the vero.

the mkv file from the usb stick also froze after ~5mins.
here’s another log: https://paste.osmc.tv/oqakulupil

i think the livetv (constant stutter) and the mkv problem (freeze) are different problems, because the mkv/file problem emerged later (no problems before dec, 13th, pretty sure i watched a 4k file without problems on dec, 11th)…

today there was another update, didn’t change anything on my osmc.

as i had a spare rpi4 i tried to set that up with libreelec and (with same tvheadend client and avdancedsettings.xml) everything works there. used the same LAN cable, so i think we can rule network problems out?

please , please do so, i’d prefer my vero4k over the rpi

@sam_nazarko:
For what it’s worth, the issues in the videoclip OP posted here looks EXACTLY like the issue the other OP and I have on different files streamed through local network (in my case 1080p50) that are described in this thread.

Maybe the changes in the video stack that came with the November update are responsible for the problems?

Edit: While reading through it, this also looks similar: https://discourse.osmc.tv/t/video-hangs-audio-continue/

That issue has already been reported as fixed.
