I have a few large files (eg. 50gb h265 encodes) that are struggling to play and wondered if anyone had any positive experiences adding a gigabit lan adaptor?
You shouldnāt need a gigabit Ethernet adapter.
Most will work; but Iād be more interested in resolving the issue you are experiencing and saving you a need for an additional peripheral.
It sounds like your struggling issues might actually occur from protocol overhead or mounting your shares in Kodi which isnāt ideal for higher bitrate content.
- How are you mounting your shares?
- Can you post MediaInfo output for an afflicted file?
Sam
Ok, Iāll give the shares mounting thing a go. The file is fine as far as Iām concerned because it plays ok on my shield tv. I added my share as follows:
Settings> media > library > videos > add videos > browse > add network location > protocol smb >
I then manually put in my details
Is there a better way of mounting?
After Iāve done this, I can select the share from the ābrowse for new shareā menu. It shows up as smb://wdmycloudex4100
Ugh. Iāll give it a go although I genuinely think it is the network choking. How do I then add movies to my library? Do I browse from the library menu.
Well therefore Sam was asking for the Mediainfo of the file. Any file with <94 Mbit would play via Fast Ethernet.
Add Files -> Root Filesystem -> /mnt/Your Share
How do I get the media info?
Hmmm

Well Fast Ethernet should be fine to play that. Either try the fstab based mounting or alternative copy the file to emmc to check if it plays fine
Annoyingly I canāt SSH into my device. I managed it yesterday and changed the password. And logged in several times using that password. Now when I try to connect i get a permission denied error at the password prompt.
My OSMC has a different IP address from yesterday. Can that impact on access?
No, as long as you use the current/right IP
Got it. I was using capitals for OSMC in the SSH prompt. Thanks for your patience!
Ok. That actually seems to have helped! Thanks
What has helped? The fstab based mounting?
Yes. Seems to have. Thanks for the help. Iām still having difficulty playing back one file but iāve checked that and itās VC1. The bitrate is pretty low for that but itās in constant slow motion, unless it plays in the background behind the menu. Then itās absolutely fine
Hey sorry to bother you again, I donāt suppose it would be possible to create a script that would change the refresh rate to 60Hz whenever it encounters a VC1 file? They basically seem to play in slow motion if played back at 24Hz
To what value have you set āadjust refresh rateā ?
And if it is only on VC-1 maybe continue in this thread
Yeah its definitely that issue. Only VC1ās and the problem goes away if I donāt adjust refresh rate and leave it at 60Hz. Iāll keep an eye on the other thread.
Sorryā¦tried watching this file again and whilst thereās been a definite improvement by switching the way my share is mounted, it started stuttering again. About an hour into the movie this time, but I got the buffering sign, audio dropouts etc. Any other suggestions?
