Hello everyone, thanks for reading this, and in advance for any suggestions …
“Vero 2”. Wired connection into a port of a multi-speed (10/100/1000 Mb/s) managed switch; big, fast, “Solaris 11” server sharing media via NFS (v3/v4). The media shares I’ve manually NFS mounted under “/home/Multimedia/” (new directory) by editing “/etc/fstab”; they’re mounted forcing TCP (rather than UDP). I’ve also tried accessing the same share by adding an “nfs://…” entry to the library (which presumably will have automounted the share somewhere under “/media/”?) and got exactly the same results. Using IPv4 (not even sure whether the “Vero 2” supports IPv6?) to keep things just that little bit simpler …
OK, so that’s a slight simplification of the setup, but that’s basically what’s going on.
The network itself is not congested. When running tests, I’ve even made sure there is basically no other traffic (of any significance) on the LAN - no difference. Neither the “Solaris” server, nor the “Vero 2” box, report any dropped packets, input or output errors or collisions, and literally billions of packets pass in and out of that server daily. The managed switch is also quite happy with both the “Solaris” server and “Vero 2” ports. So no networking problems.
The main test files I’m using are “Prometheus” (Blu-Ray, ripped using “AnyDVD HD”), “Prometheus” (Blu-Ray 3D, …) and, and please don’t hold this against me, “Frozen” (Blu-Ray 3D, …).
Now, I expect issues with “Frozen”. Disney are notorious for crazy “seamless branching” on their discs and I’ve regularly seen commercial 3D Blu-Ray players struggle with them. Though I was hoping for better from OSMC (and I’m sure ultimately that’s exactly what we’ll get).
“Prometheus” though should play fine, both the 3D and 2D versions.
Now, we’re having 3D problems anyway, which again I’m confident will be resolved (see Can’t get any 3D to work if you’re interested in the issues we’re having there). So the 3D discs just play the 2D (left eye) track, in 2D. However, the images should still be able to play properly.
So what’s the issue? Well:
“Prometheus”, both versions:
Takes about 2 minutes to start playing the disc. Then, it pauses for 6-7 seconds almost exactly every 1m15s. No audio drop-out; CPUs aren’t particularly busy; UI is responsive (E.g., pressing “i” or the 3 horizontal lines & dots button); etc. etc. etc. etc. But the video pauses, the “paused” OSD comes up, and 6-7 seconds later it resumes (and the OSD message goes away).
And it does this every ~1 1/4 minutes. Regular as clockwork.
“Frozen”:
Takes about 2-3 minutes to start playing the disc. Then it’s unwatchable - it’s constantly stuttering (plays a second or so of video, pauses, plays …) and has virtually no sound (not lack of volume, lack of sound, presumably because the “Vero 2” is desperately trying to sync. it with the jerky video). To the extent that even if, as very occasionally it does, the video remains free of visually apparent stutter for a minute or so, there’s still almost invariably no sound.
I’m playing it in the background as I type this - 5:24 into the film at the moment, and so far I’ve had less than 10 seconds of sound.
Now, some people might consider that an advantage () but I’m a bit old-fashioned like that - if I’m watching a movie, I’d at least like to have the option of sound for it …
(just met the boulder trolls - still no sound other than a few seconds of the ice miners’ singing at the start).
Pausing and re-starting the video makes no difference incidentally …
I’ve looked at the other posts in this topic, such as Vero 2 Playback/Stop glitch with some videos, Jerky playback and no sound on some videos, etc., but no help there.
This was worse when I first set up the “Vero 2”. So I tuned the NFS server on the “Solaris” box to use 128K transfers for sequential reads (“Solaris” default is 32K), plus a few other miscellaneous bits & pieces - that got us to where we are now from the (much) worse place where we started, but it’s still not usable at the moment. That would suggest the “Vero 2” is perhaps having trouble getting data from the network fast enough, but it shouldn’t be having any sort of issue like that and we use exactly the same set-up to stream media (over NFS, from the same share) to, for example, “Dune Base 3D” players and have none of these issues - the “Dune” actually even plays “Frozen”, in 3D, perfectly (though believe me it’s one of the only Blu-Ray rips, of any sort, which the darn’ thing will play …).
So there really shouldn’t be any issues getting the data into the player over NFS …
Obviously I’m quite happy to post whatever logs might be helpful, but it’s one of those sorts of problems where dumping every log file on the system into this discussion probably wouldn’t be useful …
So, any thoughts or suggestions please anyone?
Cheers,
Tris.
Ps. It’s now the coronation scene - ~19 1/2 minutes in, and still no sound since the brief burst of ice miners’ song …
